Rutgers University Honorary Degrees

Do you know a Cook College, College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, or College of Agriculture graduate who has earned outstanding national or international acclaim and would be worthy of an honorary doctorate from Rutgers University?

The Rutgers Faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees seeks nominations more two years in advance of the presentation at the spring University Commencement ceremony. For example, candidates for a 2010 honorary degree must be nominated in 2008. Candidates should add to the distinction and tradition of the University and should have attained scholarly excellence or should have made major contributions to society. A letter of nomination and appropriate biographical material, curriculum vitae and/or other supporting documentation must be submitted for consideration.

Send nomination packages to: Office of the Secretary of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 7 College Avenue, New Brunswick, N. J. 18901-1260.

  • Doctor of Laws: Distinguished service to state or nation, to learning or to humankind.
  • Doctor of Letters or Doctor of Fine Arts: Distinguished service to letters, art, music or education.
  • Doctor of Science: Distinguished service to science.
  • Doctor of Humane Letters: Distinguished service of a general nature.

Information on the honorary degree nomination process is available at http://ruweb.rutgers.edu/governance/secretary/hondegrees.shtml.

Nominations must be submitted using a standardized Honorary Degree Nomination Form along with appropriate biographical information or a curriculum vitae, if available, and/or other supporting material.  You may also use this form to nominate a Rutgers University Commencement Speaker. If you have nominated someone in the past and would like that person to be reconsidered this year, please renominate the individual.

Nominations will be kept confidential and nominees should not be contacted.  You may send nominations and supporting documentation electronically to secretary@oldqueens.rutgers.edu or by U. S. Postal Service or campus mail to:

Faculty Committee on Honorary Degrees, c/o Office of the Secretary of the University, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 7 College Avenue, Winants Hall, Room 112, College Avenue Campus, New Brunswick,, NJ 08901-1260

We welcome your participation in this important university process.  If you have questions on the nomination or selection process, please contact secretary@oldqueens.rutgers.edu or 732-932-1352.
